Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare
  • Supporting Recovery in Parents with Co-Occurring Disorders in Child Welfare: Training Videos - In partnership with the Minnesota Center for Chemical and Mental Health (MNCAMH), CASCW created a three-part video series titled, Supporting Recovery in Parents with Co-Occurring Disorders in Child Welfare. This video series features experts discussing the unique challenges and resources needed to support parents struggling with CODs.

  • Family Drug Court Learning Academy - The FDC Learning Academy consist of a series of web-based trainings that assess the needs, initiate strategic planning, implement program improvements, evaluate performance, and sustain FDCs.  Launched in 2010, the Learning Academy is comprised of four levels of "learning communities" that are responsive to the developmental stages of FDCs.
  
​Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
  • SAMHSA has made available 12 National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NCSACW) webinars on its YouTube Channel. The free webinars highlight hot topics, including medication-assisted treatment and the treatment of opioid use during pregnancy, and a series on evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and building collaborative practice for the care of pregnant women with opioid use disorders. Child- and family-serving systems across the country are working to develop policies and practices to address prenatal exposure to opioids.

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN)
  • Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse Online - This Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse online course was developed to provide training and materials for mental health clinicians, substance abuse treatment providers, parents, caregivers, and youth on the complexities between psychological trauma and co-occurring substance abuse and dependency. The course is comprised of the following training components: 1) a 90 minute interactive online training entitled Understanding Traumatic Stress and Substance Abuse Among Adolescents 2) a one hour featured lecture presentation by Dr. Robert Pynoos entitled Youth with Trauma Histories, PTSD, and Co-Occurring Substance Abuse 3) a four part Train-the-Trainer video series entitled Trauma and Co-Occurring Disorders: Understanding and Working with Youth and Their Caregivers and 4) product information on the NCTSN training toolkit entitled Understanding the Links Between Adolescent Trauma and Substance Abuse: A Toolkit for Providers (2nd Edition). This ATSA online course also offers a Learning Community where participants can share their experiences using and disseminating these materials in the field, receive guidance and feedback, and obtain additional resources and training. This project was funded by SAMHSA.​​

  • Online Tutorials - The free tutorials focus on the subjects of substance abuse and child welfare; they support and facilitate collaboration between the child welfare system, the substance abuse treatment system and the courts. Continuing Education Units are available upon successful completion of a tutorial.

NEW - Using Motivational Interviewing in Everyday Practice 
  • This online course is designed to raise awareness, increase knowledge, and foster interest among child welfare professionals for the use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in their daily work with families and children. This course will expand upon the core principles, processes, and practices that comprise MI and facilitate the change process. Child welfare professionals will learn how to bring the spirit of MI into their service system, and how integrating MI into child welfare practices can change how clients experience their involvement with the system and make changes in their lives.

    Participants will be able to:
    • Analyze specific techniques and strategies for effectively motivating families to move positively through the Stages of Change
    • Describe how the child welfare professional can evoke and respond to change talk
    • Explain the steps in creating a Change Plan and soliciting commitment for change
    • Share their personal strategy for continued development of MI skills​
